Blurb

Dr. Erin Miller’s life was going great; for the most part, anyway. She was single, had a career she loved, and a cherished circle of friends, but something was missing. Wanting to find her soul mate, she’s gun shy after her boss took advantage of her feelings for him during her first year as an intern. Although she dates occasionally, she always breaks things off before her heart gets involved. When a mentorship with the Chief Pediatric Surgeon becomes available, she couldn’t be more thrilled. Maybe this is just what the doctor ordered! She decides to pursue it, confident she will be chosen for the coveted role of mentee. That is, until the handsome and charismatic Dr. Kyle Reynolds decides he wants the mentorship as well.

Kyle Reynolds has lost everything including his wife and daughter. With nothing left in his life worth living for except his job, he sets his sights on the new mentorship position with single-minded determination. The only obstacle between him and his goal is Dr. Erin Miller.

“Can I cut in?”
She jerked her head in his direction and shot him a dirty look. Kyle’s pulse raced as he glanced over her body. She wore a short skirt and halter-top. Her clothes flattered all the right places on her. She’d finished the look off with some sexy heels.
“No.”
The other man’s hands slid to her hips, pulling her closer. Kyle couldn’t miss the surprised expression that appeared on her face. Or how he wanted to rip the man’s hands from her hips at that moment.
“I believe it’s her choice who she dances with.”
“Listen, you had your chance before I asked her,” Dave barked back.
“Hello, I’m right here and can speak for myself. I’m not some toy.”
The other guy walked off in a huff, spitting something about jealous boyfriends. Kyle pulled her close. She flattened her palms against his chest. The heat from her hands seared him, as if there wasn’t a shirt as a barrier between her touch and his bare flesh.
“I never said I wanted to dance with you.”
“The hell I will.” She took her hands off him and turned to leave, but he grabbed her arm and pulled her back.

Kyle placed her arms around his neck and molded her body to his. Like a switch, the arousal he’d seen in her eyes earlier flared to life.  A sensual voice echoed around them as it blared from the speakers. She took a ragged breath before she moved with him.
She rolled her hips into him, and he pulled her closer, allowing no space between them.
His right hand trailed a slow path down her arm; goose bumps rose on her satiny skin. Kyle looked at Erin as his hand trailed down to her hips, her gaze on his mouth. He could tell what had happened earlier had affected her as much as it had him. He planned to kiss her before the night ended, but for now, he’d enjoy having her in his arms, keeping her wondering when it would happen.
She drew her focus to his eyes. “You’re arrogant.”
“Yes, and now we have that out of the way, let’s move on, because it’s not going to change.”He bent closer to her and inhaled the cinnamon-orange scent that was only her. Je tu vous embrasserai, donc à fond que vous oublierez votre nom, votre sucre.”
“Stop, doing that! I haven’t a clue what you said.”
He moved closer to where only she could hear him. “I said I’m going to kiss you, so thoroughly you’ll forget your name, Sugar.” Kyle moved back and watched her cheeks flush pink as she contemplated what he’d said.

Review:
Two brilliant doctors vying for the same coveted position. Problem is…they are going to be not only fighting for the position, but also their hearts.

Dr. Erin Miller is smart, determined, goal oriented and one of the most brilliant surgical residents on staff. Her dream has always been to work with children and now she has a chance to achieve that goal. Her only obstacle is Dr. Kyle Reynolds. Our first description of him is priceless, “God, could his scrubs hug his body any tighter?”

Kyle lives every day for his job. With nothing else in his life, he only wants to be the best he can be. After losing his daughter, he is bound and determined to never allow another parent feel what he felt when he lost his little girl. He is an arrogant, but amazing surgeon. He is a perfect candidate for the job.

Erin and Kyle have been at the same hospital from the beginning, starting their internship at the same time. They had chemistry right from the start, but circumstances got in the way and now they have the position for mentorship with a predominate surgeon as an barrier too. Ms. Fox didn’t play that obvious angle in the plot; it was more of a starting point for them. As their attraction grew the job actually took a whole different angle all together. I enjoyed how she tackled their troubles and made Erin and Kyle seem like real people with real problems. I fell in love with them right from the beginning.

I really should mark my rating down to say 4.5 cups, but I can’t. I have two reasons; one problem is there is something that happened between the lovers that was never resolved. Normally that wouldn’t be a concern for me if it wasn’t continually brought up. It was addressed right at the end of the book and a then a few pages later the story was done. Poof – that was it no answers or closure! It would have been better not to blatantly shine a light on it and then just drop it. My second problem is obvious editing errors. They were not major, just correctly spelled words that were not right for their context. One example is the use of trusted instead of thrusted. Believe me “trusted” wasn’t the proper word. But according to Word, thrusted is a misspelled word, so that could have been the problem.

I enjoyed the novel too much to even allow those two points to deter me from giving it a rating of 5 Cups. I totally enjoyed every sentence. There was realism, tenderness and believability. Road to Recovery is an exceptionally well written contemporary romance novel.

Great News To Share!

I’m doing a huge happy dance this morning. I sold the book Bound To Protect to my editor. Kyle and Erin are in it as well from Road to Recovery. This is such a relief because every author after they sell their first book wonders if they will sell another one. My editor and I had a couple of things to work out, and we’re able to do that in the story. Now I’ve got to work on the revisions she sent me. Which should be interesting with the kids home for summer break. It shouldn’t take long as there’s not much unlike with Road to Recovery. I’ll keep everyone informed of then it’s set to release once I know more.

Here’s my unofficial unedited blurb for Bound To Protect.

Katie Thomas has been living a secret life for four years to keep safe− that is. All of that is about to come to a crashing halt when her ex shows up again. She’s scared and not sure what to do, until she moves next door to fellow doctor, Chad Davis. He’s the last person she wants to live next door to, but one sizzling night together has her yearning for more. The only thing that stands in her way is what he wants in and outside of the bedroom. It’s a threat to everything she’d ever believed.

When her past comes back to haunt her, can she trust Chad enough or will it be too late?

Chad Davis has had a thing for her since he took on the job to protect her four years ago. The only thing is, she doesn’t know about her having protection. He’s determined to help bring her ex down for his own personal reasons and then to get on with his life−finally. Except one night of her in his bed and he’s not ready to give her up, even though she insists she’s not what he needs or wants.

Can he help her unlock her hidden desires and show her that this is more than a fling for him?

Six Sentence Sunday 6-25-11

This week’s six comes from my book Road to Recovery it’s available now. We see Kyle at a low point in his life.

Tears burned the back of his eyes. His knees shook and finally gave out. He dropped to the ground, his knees sinking into the mud as the pain gripped his heart, squeezing like a vice. He’d do anything to trade places with her. It should have been him. She was just an innocent child and didn’t deserve to die.

Valentine’s Day with Kyle & Erin

I won’t be able to do a blog post today due to kids’ Valentine Parties at school. So I’ve asked Kyle and Erin from my debut book Road to Recovery, to come and do the post for me. I’m still not sure this will be a good idea, as you never know what will come out of Kyle’s mouth, but Erin assured me that she’ll make sure he behaves. Stay tuned at the end of the post for a chocolate cake recipe that I make every year on Valentine’s Day.

I swear I never thought she’d leave. Alyssa seriously needs to learn to let go of some control. It would do her some good. Anyway, so today is Valentine’s Day and for once, Kyle and I have a day off at the same time. That’s not always the case, so when it happens it’s nice. Kyle should be here shortly, but, well you see, we were making that cake that Alyssa mentioned above, and we ended up in a cake batter fight. It was all his fault of course, so I made him clean up the kitchen. Enough about that, I should get back on the topic.

This is Kyle and my first Valentine’s together. Well, I have a confession. I never had a boyfriend before on this day. I always broke things off before it got too serious and one of my biggest things was absolutely no Valentine for me on this day. What the hell was I thinking having that rule?

I know I had to be like the only woman out there that thought this way. This is what so many women look forward to, seeing what their significant other will get them. Over the years, it was another day for me. I never paid attention when the day was. Well, not this year. Kyle knew all of this about me, and he wouldn’t let us just have it pass as another day.

Let’s just say I’ve had a change of heart after seeing Kyle in the kitchen with nothing on but a pair of tight fitting jeans as he cooked breakfast for us this morning. I thought that would be all he did, but no, not Mr. Arrogant Ass as I like to call him at times. He had flowers delivered and we’ve spent the day together turning off our cell phones and the home phone, so no one would interrupt us.

“Erin, come join me in the shower. I can help you get all the batter out of those hard to reach places.”

“Behave, Kyle, we’re supposed to be doing the blog post for Alyssa.”

“No, you agreed to it. I never did.”

“I’ll be there in a minute.”

I really should get moving. This cake batter is super sticky, and now my keyboard is all sticky. We can’t wait for people to read our story. Alyssa will keep you posted when it’s supposed to come out. Oh yeah, before I go, I have a question for everyone.

What’s was your most memorable Valentine’s Day and why? Share below. We really want to know, and I’m sure Alyssa will be back later to check the comments to make sure we did as we were told. She’ll also be responding to comments, as it looks like I’ll be pretty busy with Kyle the rest of the day, if you know what I mean.

My True Love Cake

I got this recipe from the Taste of Home magazine a few years ago. It’s really good and now I make it every year for Valentine’s Day.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons plus 1-1/2 teaspoons baking cocoa
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • FILLING:
  • 2 packages (8 ounces each) cream cheese, softened
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1/4 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 can (21 ounces) cherry pie filling, divided

Directions

  • In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in vanilla. Combine the flour, cocoa and baking soda; add to creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk. Beat in water and oil until smooth.
  • Pour into two greased and floured 9-in. heart-shaped baking pans. Bake at 350° for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes before removing from pans to wire racks to cool completely.
  • In a bowl, beat cream cheese and sugar until fluffy. Beat in cream and extract. Place one cake on a serving plate; spread with half of cream cheese mixture. Refrigerate for 10 minutes. Top with 1 cup pie filling and second cake; spread with remaining cream cheese mixture. Make a heart-shaped indentation in center of cake; fill with remaining pie filling. Refrigerate until serving. Yield: 12 servings.
